FAQ

When can I apply for the 2017-2018 Foot Locker Scholarship?
The application for this year's class opens on September 26, 2017. The application due date is December 15, 2017 at 5PM EST. You'll want to make sure that your full application— including your one non-family letter recommendation— is submitted on time in order to be considered!
What is the Ken C. Hicks Scholarship?
The Ken C. Hicks Scholarship will be awarded to one of the twenty high school students selected as part of the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program. The scholarship honors Ken’s incredible legacy as former Chairman and CEO of Foot Locker, and recognizes his deep commitment to academic excellence. This exceptional individual will receive an additional $5,000 (for a total of $25,000) for demonstrating superior educational achievement as well as outstanding leadership, and a true love of the game. The recipient must have a personal passion and drive to succeed, demonstrate strong core values, bring others along, and participate fully and with enthusiasm, whether in school, in sports, or in their community.
What if I'm not on a high school varsity team?
Doesn't matter! As long as you are committed to sports in some way, we'll still consider your application.
What if I don't intend to play sports in college?
Again, no sweat. We just want to see that you've exemplified superior leadership skills in multiple settings, including your sports team(s), your school, and your community.
I'm currently enrolled in college. Can I still apply for this scholarship?
The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes scholarship is only open to high school seniors who will be entering their freshman year of college in the Fall of 2018. Unfortunately, current college students are not eligible to apply.
What can the scholarship money be used for?
The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes scholarship can be applied to tuition, fees, and required supplies as billed directly by the winner's accredited, four-year college/university. The $20,000 scholarship will be awarded in four equal annual payments of $5,000 throughout the winner's four-year college career. Keep in mind that we generally send the scholarship directly to the winner's college to be applied to tuition and fees. The winner of the Ken C. Hicks scholarship will receive an additional $5,000 to their total award. That winner's college will receive their scholarship in four installments of $6,250.
When does the application close?
The application closes on December 15, 2017 at 5pm EST for all candidates (even if you live in Central, Mountain, or Pacific Coast time zones).
I'd like to nominate a student for this scholarship. How do I do so?
Awesome! All you have to do is fill out this nomination form. We will then send an email to the student you nominated letting them know that you think they would be an amazing candidate for the Foot Locker scholarship and that they should apply!
Do I have to be nominated by someone in order to apply?
Nope! Anyone that is a high school senior and is starting college in the fall of 2018 is eligible to apply and can do so from the home page. The nomination form is there for you to share the news of this scholarship with all the other outstanding young athletes in your life.
What is the minimum GPA?
You must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 to apply for the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes program. Additionally, you must be college-bound to an accredited four-year college/university in Fall 2018.
What are the essay questions?
For this scholarship, you will be required to answer the two essay questions below.

Sports teach important lessons in leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. How have you embodied these qualities on your team and in your community? (Your community could include: your volunteer experiences, any leadership roles at your school or youth groups, and/or any other projects or efforts you think we should really know about!). Suggested length of 300-500 words.

Describe a defining moment in your life that has helped to shape your dreams and plans for the future. (Be sure to describe your academic/career goals and any challenges you’ve faced or are currently facing and how they have shaped your aspiration). Suggested length of 300-500 words.
What’s the deal with the recommendations?
One non-family is REQUIRED in order to complete your application. This person should be a teacher, coach, administrator, or mentor who is able to attest to how you have demonstrated great character and leadership in sports, school, and your broader community. You will have the opportunity to submit one additional recommendation, but it is entirely optional.
Who should I approach for a second recommendation?
The strongest recommenders are people who are well informed about your social action projects and educational goals. This should be someone who knows you well, but more importantly can attest to the actions you have taken to better and strengthen your community, your team, and/or your school. Please ask your recommender to speak to their thoughts about the quality of your work, your impact, and your collaboration with the community. They should be as specific as possible. We suggest that you send your recommender the judging criteria.
Will my recommenders be able to see what I write on my essays?
We will not share any information you've given us with the people you ask for recommendations, aside from your name and e-mail address. After all, they should know enough about your awesomeness by now to write you a recommendation.
Help! I am having an issue with my application.
Oops, sorry about that! Reach out to us at footlocker@tmistrategy.org and we’ll help you out right away.
How do I go back and edit my application?
You can edit your application by going to the application status page and clicking “Edit” next to the section you want to change. You must first be logged in to view this page. Please do note: you will not be able to edit your application after it is submitted.
I accidentally entered the wrong email address for my recommender. How can I edit this?
To edit a recommender’s contact information, sign into your account and navigate to the "recommendation/create page." In other words, once you are logged in, type recommendation/create to the url in the address bar so the url reads https://footlockerscholarathletes.com/recommendation/create. That should take you to the recommendation page where you can edit the information for your recommender and then resend the request.
Help! A student sent me a recommendation request but the link in the email isn't working.
No worries! This often occurs if a student sends one recommender multiple requests. Each email has a unique link, so if you received more than one request from the same student, just open the link in the most recently delivered email. Please contact us at footlocker@tmistrategy.org if you need any more help!
What happens if my computer crashes while I am working on the application?
Yikes! Computer crashes are the worst. To protect your application from being lost, make sure to FIRST write your essays in Word or Google Docs and then copy/paste them into the online application. This is IMPORTANT: as you work on your application, periodically hit "Save as Draft" button (at the bottom of the application pages) to save your changes. We have no ability to access your application if your computer crashes before you hit save, so please help us help you by making sure you have back-up copies of your essays.
Ok, I submitted an application, what now?
First, give yourself a high five for a job well done. We’ll reach out to you if you are a semi-finalist with an opportunity to interview with us via video chat. We plan to announce the 20 winners, including the Ken C. Hicks scholarship winner, in June 2018.
How are we being evaluated?
You will be judged in three different phases. The first phase a team of expert judges will be reviewing candidates to make sure they embody qualities of a good scholar-athlete. In the second phase, Foot Locker staff will conduct interviews (via video chat) to gain more insight. Lastly, in the third phase, Foot Locker will decide the final 20 Foot Locker Scholar Athletes. For more information about how applicants will be considered, please read through the judging criteria.
